The last Thursday, February 25, Bartolom\u00e9 P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez, professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine of the UMH, was awarded in “Gala Importantes of the Informaci\u00f3n”<\/strong> by the treatment of addictions <\/a> in the public health system.
\nThe psychiatrist from Alicante received the Provincial Auditorium of Alicante (ADDA)<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the award as “Importantes” in its 31st Edition.<\/p>\n

\nThe professor of Psychiatry Bartolom\u00e9 P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez<\/strong> collected the sculpture in the form of ‘I’ made in iron by the artist Adriano Carrillo<\/a>\u00a0as “Importante” for his role in the treatment of addictive behaviors in the University Hospital of Sant Joan d’Alacant (Spain)<\/strong>. What is the goal of addiction treatment in the public health system by Bartolom\u00e9 P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez?<\/h2>\n

The Hospital of Sant Joan d’Alacant (Spain)<\/strong> is considered one of the 22 centres chosen worldwide to be part of a clinical trial where it is testing the first drug against cocaine addiction<\/strong>.
\nThis study is head by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)<\/a> of the United States<\/strong>, as well as by an israeli laboratory. The study 210 patients through 22 medical teams, 15 in the USA and 7 in Spain. The Hospital de Sant Joan d’Alacant (Spain), in particular the \u00a0Unit of Alcohology<\/a><\/strong>, is the only centre of Valencian Community which is integrated in the clinical trial. Other four hospitals in Barcelona and two in Madrid completed the Spanish contribution in it.
\nThe main objective of this new drug is none other than the get through genetic manipulation one up, called butirilcolinesterasa (BChE)<\/strong>, \u00abmore active to get the cocaine is metabolized more quickly <\/strong>and degrade a substance without psychotropic activity\u00bb, explained the Dr.\u00a0Bartolom\u00e9 P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez<\/strong>, responsible of the Unit of Alcohology of the Hospital University Hospital of Sant Joan d’Alacant (Spain)<\/strong>. The BChE is one of the most important enzymes in the metabolism of cocaine. New on getting through this drug “has more power to metabolize this substance and longevity in the blood.” The drug that is being tested in patients is administered on a weekly basis through intramuscular injection.

\nThe main priority of the clinical trial, says Dr. P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez<\/strong>, the head of the Unit of Alcohology and professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine of the UMH, \u00abis that till this moment there is no drug to treat cocaine addiction\u00bb<\/strong>\u00bb, hence the prospects are hopeful. The study is currently in its phase II, “which is to seek the most effective dose of the drug”. The recruitment of patients in all centres of the country involved in the trial, which will be extended over the next three months, has already started.
\nThe clinical study is composed by two parts, in addition to administering the medication, the patient has to undergo psychotherapy to treat his addiction. “Those involved in the trial have to come to query three times a week, so that we manage them medication, make them timely follow-up controls and participate in psychotherapy,” says Dr. P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez.
\nThe criteria that it is following to recruit patients is having between 18 and 60 years <\/strong>, with cocaine dependence, with or without alcohol dependence, “and with sufficient motivation to complete the study, since there are very few places available,” concludes Dr. Bartolom\u00e9 P\u00e9rez G\u00e1lvez.
